first of all, large headphone use a little more battery than earphone (not much difference, but the main point is you won’t get full experience of large headphone on small portable device. because good full size headphone is about being able to handle large power without distortion .. ) Invest in one of those used simple brand name integrated amplifier or preamp for home use, you can buy one for $40 or so at ebay. Or go to flee market if you live in big city. It doesn’t matter old or new, you just want the most efficient headphone driver. They are designed to power speaker so anything would be overkill. All you need to care is low distortion and noise for the headphone out. It will make huge difference than iPod. They last forever and you can always sell it to somebody who needs to drive a nice headphone. The smaller ipod models are truly shit. They should be banned period.

ultra cheap headphone. Sony MDR V150. Can be had for $15.  (It’s pretty sturdy, and my choice for throw around, in every drawer kind of headphone. It has ok sound for its price. plus it has the least impedance for headphone. It’s more a headphone for small device. The big point: You won’t cry if you lost it.)

MDR V6. around $70. I think this is the honda accord of studio monitor headphone. It’s the first affordable, but sounds pretty darned good headphone when it came out. It also lasts forever if you takes good care. Since it’s a real studio headphone it can handle bigger power from deck equipments. The problem the cup is a little small , newer sennheiser has bigger and much comfier cup)  I suppose sennheiser now has competing model in this price range too.

For hard bass, I never live with one/just using it briefly, you might want to try listening to DJ headphone. It supposes to work in loud environment and designed for club music type. You get  all your boom and tiss out in front.) Technics 1200 seems popular. You gonna cry if you lose this headphone tho’. And you are going to lost it if you careless with it.

and lastly if you check around headphone, listen to open air headphone. They sounds really nice. (Sennheiser is most famous for its 500 and 600 model) But open air headphone is expensive, fragile, and not for traveling. and you definitely going to cry for weeks if you lost one of these.
